HEALTHY EATING IN COSTA RICA

29.12.14

At home, in the States, I had it all figured out. Feeding my family with wholesome organic produce was my first priority. I bought my produce from organic farmers, was part of a local CSA, made my own yogurt, always grew my own fruit and vegetables. I am a strong advocate of you are what you eat.

This year on our travels it hasn't been always easy. I expected costa rica to be fruit and vegetable paradise but it wasn't. Organic produce is not easily found, local grocery store Maxi Pali is owner by Walmart, even the public market has very few organic items but we managed for a month and now we found a place that fits our lifestyle.

We live in sustainable organic community that grows most of its produce on site. Our friends organized a driver who goes weekly to organic market and buys all the additional things that don't grow here plus organic meats and dairy. We are once again on track.
All from organic market (Feria Verde in San Jose); carrots, choyotes, yogurt, organic raw milk, eggs and most importantly organic chocolate yum

Homemade organic lunches in the Ecovilla school, all fresh, all seasonal grown in the school's garden
for additional products like quinoa flour, superfood powders and organic ice cream we go to green center in Santa Ana. It's definitely more expensive to eat well in costa rica but at the end for us there is no other option, buying good, organic produce is an investment in our health.
