A DAY IN MONTEZUMA

12.2.15

In the morning, after leaving Rick's apartments, we went for a short visit to Rancho Delicioso, a permaculture farm and eco community. While they had few options for us to stay overnight, one being an amazing tree house, we decided to head straight for the beach. We have heard so much about Montezuma's laid back vibe and its fantastic beaches that we just couldn't wait to see it for ourselves.
We went to the bakery cafe to grab a bite to eat, we ended up with an amazing breakfast, watched white-throated magpie-jay steal foods from unattended tables and made friends with the waitstaff. The town is so small that I decided to run around and check out various hotels and found the best one for the price and location to be "Luz de Mono." We checked into one of their casitas for 100$ a night. Three things sold us on this hotel, a kitchen inside the casita, a pool with a view of the ocean and the fact that the monkeys were hanging out right in the reception room. This entire hotel is surrounded by the jungle filled with monkeys, coatis and magpie jays.

After a quick change we went to the sea turtle conservation program located right on the beach in montezuma. Turtles were not ready to be released into the ocean that day so we spent the rest of the day hanging out with a crew from "adventuring five" and playing in the sand.

We had a dinner at the local soda restaurant and later had few beers by the pool and went to bed. turned out we might have gone to bed a little too early since the town's party noise kept us awake until midnight anyway.

But the best time to explore montezuma is early morning. You get the feel of that sleepy party town by walking the empty beach where only herons are making noise, taking photos of the bare streets and restaurants plus morning sun is best for photographing architectural details allowing you to see montezuma in a much different light.

Before breakfast we had a coati come to our casita looking for food. It's the best education for our unschooled children to observe the animals in their natural habitat. We then ask questions and look for answers. These gentle creatures are the friendlier cousins of raccoons in Costa Rica.

After breakfast this jungle hotel filled up with monkeys waiting to be fed bananas. this was very exciting for the kids and adults alike.

There is so much to do in Montezuma, we only spent one day here but would highly recommend it. Within short drive or bike ride you'll find secluded beaches. You can take a hike to famous montezuma waterfalls. Its long beach is perfect for walking and long conversations. The white sand was perfect for hanging out with kids on the beach. I felt much safer here then in Manuel Antonio the also very popular tourist town and we got to see many more monkeys here in Montezuma.
For us its a perfect place to come visit again.
